About SoundSteps
New sound takes time. Whether you are settling in with your first hearing aids or your brain is still catching up to a cochlear implant, the gap between hearing a sound and following a conversation closes with practice — short, steady sessions that ask a little more of you as you improve.
SoundSteps is built for that work. It gets harder as you get better. It brings in many voices and accents, so you are not memorizing a handful of recordings. It lets you add background noise a little at a time, because restaurants and group tables are where listening gets hard. And it tracks your progress, so "am I getting better?" has an answer.
SoundSteps is built by a longtime member of the deaf and hard of hearing community with experience with both hearing aids and cochlear implants. It exists because practicing between appointments should be simple, honest, and something you can do on your own.
Think of a new ear like a muscle: strength and confidence build with steady use. Like a baby learning to walk, it crawls first — and what the research supports most is exactly that kind of consistent practice. SoundSteps works in any web browser, with any brand of hearing device. Everyone starts with a week of full access, free, so you can decide if it is for you. A free tier stays open after that.
