FAQ
Common questions
Straight answers about what SoundSteps is, what it costs, and how it works.
Is SoundSteps a medical device?
No. SoundSteps is a hearing training and practice app. It is not designed to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. For medical questions, talk to a hearing professional.
Do I need a smartphone to use it?
No. SoundSteps runs in any modern web browser on a computer, tablet, or phone. You do not need to download an app to start. Just open the site and begin.
Is there an app for my phone?
SoundSteps runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install on any device. An iPhone app is on the way.
Which devices and brands does it work with?
It works with any cochlear implant or hearing aid, from any brand. SoundSteps plays audio practice through your device the way any sound does, so it does not matter who made your implant or aids.
What does it cost?
Everyone starts with seven days of full access, free — the full library, background noise you control, and all the voices. No provider sign-off needed. After that you can stay on the free tier or move to a paid plan that keeps the full library open. Prices vary by platform, so check the current offer when you sign up.
Do I need an account to try it?
No. You can take the listening check and try the first steps as a guest. Creating a free account saves your progress so you can pick up where you left off.
How long should I practice each day?
Short sessions work well — around ten minutes on most days. Short and steady beats long and rare. A session you can repeat tomorrow is worth more than one you dread.
Does practicing actually help?
Consistency matters most. Research links active listening practice to getting more comfortable following speech over time. SoundSteps cannot promise a result, but showing up regularly is the part that tends to make the difference.
What languages does SoundSteps support?
SoundSteps works in several languages beyond English, each with its own voices and practice content — not translations of the English exercises. We add new languages regularly, so more may be available than when this was written. You can switch languages anytime in Settings.
What about my privacy — do you record my voice?
No. SoundSteps does not record or store your voice. Practice is a listen-and-respond exercise, so your answers are about what you heard, not a recording of you.
Can I share my progress with my audiologist?
You can use your practice history as a conversation aid — what you tried and where it felt harder. It is not a medical report and does not replace in-office testing or professional care.
Still curious?
The easiest way to see how it works is to try it. Start with a short listening check.
SoundSteps is designed for hearing training and practice. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. Consult a healthcare professional for medical advice.
