Spanish Aural Rehab Resources for Adults and Families

App reviews and comparisons3 min read· Reviewed

If you or someone you love listens in Spanish, you can start practicing for free today. Cochlear, MED-EL and Advanced Bionics each keep Spanish practice pages. Two audiology sites have Spanish handouts you can print. Parents of children have Hearing First and Hands & Voices. Our own app, SoundSteps, runs fully in Spanish and is free to start.

Where to start

Pick one thing to practice this week. An app works when you are on your own. A partner exercise needs someone to read words aloud, so save it for when family is around. Handouts are for reading, and for showing family what you are working on.

Kids have more Spanish material than adults, so the adult options come first.

Practice in Spanish for adults

SoundSteps is ours, so read this part knowing that. Every screen and every voice is in Spanish. Start with pairs like peso and beso, where one sound changes the word. When the pairs feel easy, move on to sentences. Short stories and conversations come after that. Add background noise when you are ready, and turn it up a little at a time.

Use it in a browser or on your phone, whatever hearing device you wear, or none. There is a free version, and you can try the full app for 7 days with no card required.

Cochlear, MED-EL and Advanced Bionics have free Spanish material as well. A lot of it is built for two people, say a sister reading words aloud while you repeat back what you heard. Some of it you can do alone.

Handouts and guides in Spanish

These two sites were made by people in audiology who work with Spanish speakers. They are written mostly for hearing care teams. Many pages are still useful to print and bring to your next appointment.

  • Audiology Materials in SpanishDoctor of Audiology project

Spanish handouts to read at home or at an appointment, plus printable tools for audiologists. You can search by topic and print what you need.

For families of children

If you are raising a child who is deaf or hard of hearing, start here. Both sites keep a Spanish section for parents.

  • Spanish ResourcesHearing First

Handouts and short ebooks in Spanish for parents, such as a familiar-sounds audiogram and daily hearing checks for children.

  • Recursos en EspañolHands & Voices

The Spanish page of a parent-led group for families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Using them together

People get better at understanding the voices they practice with. So if Spanish is what you hear at home, practice in Spanish, and if your family switches between Spanish and English, practice in both. You can change the practice language under Settings.

A good week does not need much. Try a few minutes of practice on most days, and one exercise with a family member when you both have time. If a handout raises a question, bring it to your next hearing care visit.

FAQ

Is there a listening practice app in Spanish?

Yes. SoundSteps runs fully in Spanish, including the voices, and is free to start in a browser or on a phone. For more, look at the Spanish practice pages from Cochlear, MED-EL and Advanced Bionics.

Where can I find free aural rehab materials in Spanish?

Start with the Spanish practice pages from Cochlear, MED-EL and Advanced Bionics. For handouts to print, try Audiology Materials in Spanish and Audiology en Español. If you are a parent, Hearing First and Hands & Voices both keep Spanish sections.

Are there Spanish listening exercises for adults with cochlear implants?

Yes. Cochlear's Spanish adult page has exercises you do with a partner, and MED-EL has free downloads made for adults and teens. SoundSteps is for the days nobody is around to read to you. It goes from word pairs up to full conversations in Spanish.

Does SoundSteps work in Spanish for hearing aid users?

Yes. It works the same with hearing aids, a cochlear implant, or no hearing device at all. The Spanish version has its own sentences and stories and its own voices, so you are not hearing English audio under a translated menu. Start on the free version.

Can I practice in both English and Spanish?

Yes. Change the practice language under Settings any time. If your family mixes the two at dinner, practice in both.
